Spanish Liga ASOBAL club Cajasol Ángel Ximénez Puente Genil has completed its first signing as part of the squad planning for the upcoming season. The club announced that Croatian international goalkeeper Matej Ašanin, currently playing for Beşiktaş, has joined the team on a two-year deal covering the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 seasons.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper has built an extensive career across European handball. Born in Croatia, Ašanin has played in several top European leagues including Croatia, Romania, Portugal, Germany and Spain. During his career he has represented major clubs such as RK Zagreb, CSM Bucharest, Sporting CP, TSG Friesenheim and Ademar León.
For Ašanin, the transfer also marks a return to the Liga ASOBAL. The experienced goalkeeper previously played for Ademar León between 2012 and 2014 and will now return to Spain's top handball league after 12 years.
Throughout his career, Ašanin has achieved notable success. He won the Portuguese League title twice and the Croatian League title twice, as well as the Turkish League and Turkish Super Cup. The Croatian goalkeeper is also an EHF Challenge Cup champion (now known as the EHF European Cup). In addition, he was part of the Croatian national team that won the silver medal at the 2020 European Championship. Ašanin also won the Mediterranean Games and the EHF Euro title at junior level with his national team.
Speaking after the transfer announcement, Matej Ašanin expressed his excitement about joining the Spanish club.
'I am very excited about joining Cajasol Ángel Ximénez and starting the next season with the team. Returning to Liga ASOBAL is also a big motivation for me. It is a very competitive league where anyone can beat anyone and every match is important. Many games are decided in the final moments, and I really enjoy competitions like this. I hope we can achieve all the goals we set at the beginning of the season, and personally I will give everything I have to help the team reach those goals,' he said.
With the signing of Matej Ašanin, Cajasol Ángel Ximénez Puente Genil has taken its first important step in building a strong squad for the upcoming season. The Croatian goalkeeper is expected to join the team during the summer.
